Is it a Barbecue or a Cookout?

These days the terms "barbecue" and "cookout" are used interchangeably in American culture, bringing visions of backyards, parks, grills, hot dogs and hamburgers.

The term "barbecue' originated from the indigenous Taino people of the Caribbean. They utilized a special wooden framework made of green sticks called a "barbacoa" to slow cook meat. It is believed that the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus encountered the Taino people during his 1492 voyages, bringing their barbacoa method back to Spain.

The term "cook out" came about in the early 1900's and was associated with quicker cooking of such meats as steaks, hamburgers, etc.

An increase in the availability of affordable grills and a rise in suburban living after World War II helped make this social ritual an important part of American culture.
